History

Today Naarup Savvaerk is owned by Donna Arbuckle Lund and Oluf Lund. Oluf is the 4th generation of the ”sawmill family”.

It all started in 1876 when Oluf's great grandfather, Hans Hansen, bought the property by the the little river. He dammed the river and built a water wheel to power a grain mill. There was, however, more power in the creek than he needed for his grain mill so in 1896 he decided to establish a sawmill and he set up a big logsaw. That logsaw is still here and is used frequently. There was a great demand for lumber and the sawmill grew. Hans' son, Oluf Hansen, took over the sawmill in 1907 after returning from Russia where he had worked in the sawmill business.

Oluf Hansen installed a steam engine to supplement the waterwheel and the sawmill developed into a big and important business in the local community.

A lot of lumber was cut out of logs, hauled in by two teams of horses from the local forest in Krengerup and Hesbjerg.
